USUI SHIKI RYOHO

What is Reiki? What does Reiki do?
Reiki (ray-key) means: Universal life force energy. This energy is also known by many other names including: Chi, Mana, Prana, Source, Qi, & Ki. This natural energy simply exists just like radiation and light waves. Reiki is not affiliated in any way with  any particular belief system or religion, and should be considered compatible with any faith. Usui Shiki Ryoho means: "The Usui System of Natural Healing". This system utilizes this energy for healing. It was named  by Dr Mikao Usui the father of modern Reiki (Pictured Above). This system is a simple, safe, effective healing system that uses Reiki energy to promote healing on all levels – Physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual. Reiki helps dissolve personal issues and returns the body, mind, emotions, and spirit to their natural perfect state of wellness and balance. The art of healing with life force energy is ancient and has been practiced by many cultures. Currently, Reiki is well known and practiced by millions of people all over the world. Reiki treatments are steadily gaining popularity and becoming available in many hospitals as a compliment to Western medicine. Many doctors and nurses take Reiki classes.

What can a Reiki session do for me?
We all receive Reiki or “life force energy” all the time. However, sometimes we get out of balance or blocked and cannot receive a sufficient amount of this energy, causing a state of illness that may seem physical but may be physical, mental, emotional, or spiritual. During a Reiki session, a Reiki Practitioner, that has been attuned to Reiki can focus a vast amount of this energy to you, to help clear a blockage and allow the balance to return. Because Reiki occurs on all levels, in addition to helping relieve the symptoms of your issues, Reiki works deeper to reach the cause. You don't have to be physically ill to benefit from Reiki! Reiki sessions are relaxing and enjoyable.

What are some of the known benefits of receiving Reiki?
Deeply relaxing, reduces stress, relieves all types of pain, eases anxiety, restores harmony, accelerates healing, enhances standard medical treatments, strengthens the immune system, cleanses the body of toxins, increases one’s energy, restores balance, clarity and focus, clears negativity, creates a sense of wellbeing, provides comfort for the terminally ill. Reiki is a natural energy. Receiving Reiki is painless and enjoyable. Reiki can do no harm. Anyone can benefit from & enjoy Reiki.

Can I stop seeing my doctor and/or stop taking my medicine once I start receiving Reiki treatments and feel better?
Reiki should be thought more as a compliment to standard medicine, not a replacement. Reiki can  often help you heal faster, sometimes need less medication, etc; However, you should continue to consult with your doctor or primary caregiver to monitor your progress and guide you. Please tell your doctor that you are receiving Reiki, now a days, more and more doctors are becoming familiar with Reiki.

Can the Reiki Practitioner diagnose my illness and prescribe medicines, or natural cures?
NO! The Reiki Practitioner does not diagnose symptoms of illness or disease and does not prescribe medication. If you are sick, please consult your doctor.

Does the Reiki Practitioner guarantee Reiki will help me?
No, A practitioner will create a chanel for Reiki energy to flow to you during a session, but the Reiki Practitioner is not in control of Reiki or what Reiki energy does, therefore cannot and should not make any guarantees. That being said, Reiki can do no harm, and has a long & extensive history of being very beneficial to millions of people.

What happens during a Reiki session?
After removing your shoes, you will lye on a comfortable Reiki table, face up. You will listen to nice music and just relax. The Reiki Practitioner will place their hands lightly on your body or 1 to 4 inches above you, usually following a set of standard hand positions that covers the whole body and organs. The Reiki energy travels through the practitioner to you. The Reiki session is very pleasant and relaxing. There is no inappropriate touching of sexual areas, or undressing. It is not uncommon for the receiver to experience sensations such as soothing heat, tingling, deep peace, or other pleasant feelings ranging from very subtle to very noticeable. That’s it!

Why should I take a Reiki class?
When you take a Reiki class, such as Level One, you will become attuned to Reiki energy and be abile to channel this energy whenever you desire. You can also share this energy with others. It is beautiful, fun and totally amazing to feel this energy flowing to you and through
you. There are many uses for Reiki.

How many classes are needed?
Reiki Level One is the only class that most people ever need to take. The class is given in one day, about 8 hours. Additional levels are only for those that wish to teach or give sessions to others professionally.

What happens during a Reiki class?
Classes consist of learning information related to the Reiki Level, discussion, fun exercises, demonstrations, and hands on practice. The student receives a training manual to follow along during the class, and to keep and refer to after the class. Also the student will receive the appropriate attunements for each level. See the “Classes” section for a specific description of each of the three different classes available for Traditional Reiki.

What is an Attunement?
Briefly stated: The Reiki attunements are ceremonial procedures given by a Reiki Master to a Reiki Student. Attunements change the energy fields around the recipient to allow them to channel Reiki energy. Sort of like tuning in a radio.

What is the Origin of Reiki?

Breif Topics for the Origins of Reiki

Prehistoric Healing with energy has been traced back 2,500 years and some believe as far back as 10,000 years ago, which would make energy healing truly prehistoric. It is believed to have been practiced by several ancient cultures.

Dr. Mikao Usui Was the founder of modern Reiki. In 1922 he discovered this energy during a 21 day training course on Mt. Kurama that is said to have included fasting, meditation, chanting and prayers. Legend has it that he had a mystical experience where he had a vision of the Reiki symbols and the energy entered into him. Dr.Usui started a Reiki organization in Japan soon after. He was the first president. He developed a system for using this energy for healing and named it, “The Usui System of Natural Healing“.

Dr. Chujiro Hayashi a student of Usui, was asked by Usui to further develop this system. A methodical man, he incorporated a basic hand position system to attempt to transmit Reiki to all parts of the physical body that was based on his knowledge as a medical doctor. He is said to have simplified the attunement process and is believed to have added the Master Symbol that is used for initiating Masters. He ran a Reiki healing clinic in Tokyo. He wrote, “The Hayashi Healing Guide” that had additional hand positions for specific illnesses and conditions that were developed for use in his clinic. Hayashi initiated thirteen Reiki Masters.

Mrs. Hawayo Takata A Japanese American from Hawaii traveled to Japan. First was a patient that was miraculously cured by Reiki. Became a student and worked with Hayashi. She was the thirteenth and final Master taught by Hayashi. She brought Reiki to the West when she returned to Hawaii in the late 1930‘s. She gave treatments and trained practitioners, but did not initiate Masters for many years. Finally, in her later years, fearing Reiki knowledge would die with her, she initiated twenty-two Reiki Masters between 1970 and 1980. All were taught orally, no manuals, no handouts, no note taking, nothing was written or recorded. Each Master may have received slightly different training.

22 Reiki Masters It was decided by some of these Reiki Masters, to write down recollections of the teachings to attempt to get the information to match up and keep the information from further variations. This created debate and splits occurred causing there to be similar but different “Lineages” from the teachings of Mrs. Takata. All Western Usui Reiki Masters should be able to trace their lineage back to one of these 22 Masters and therefore, back to Usui Sensei. Reiki has since been spread all over the world to millions. The Reiki teachings that remained in Japan also had their own history and vary from Western lineages. SO…which Reiki is the right one? It all depends which website you click on! Most Masters would tell you to first explore a lineage of Usui (aka Traditional) Reiki and then branch out from there if desired. Let your heart guide you.

Controversy There is much more to the fascinating stories and legends surrounding these three Reiki pioneers. There is a great deal of controversy surrounding all of this information. The amount of controversy is almost as amazing as the legions themselves! This history all occurred within the past 100 years and yet, every last fact and aspect is debated! Could it be because of the lack of documenting? Is it because legendary stories naturally get changed around to make a better story? It’s worth a Google!

Future of Reiki Due in part to all of the controversy and the desire to make Reiki “Better” or more “Correct” alternative versions of Reiki have split off, and/or sprung up, many are mixed with other modalities, beliefs, and techniques. Some include additional attunements and symbols. Some claim to be true Reiki, or an improvement to Reiki. With this abundance of growing awareness, in whatever specific form, many believe the overall consciousness of mankind is raised. Wouldn't it be a better world if everyone was attuned to Reiki?
